Doom-pile rescue

One small area, four destinations, and an actual stopping point.

Date:

01 / Name the boundary

Choose a surface no larger than your available time: one chair, a corner of a table, or one small pile. Circle a time limit: 5 / 10 / 15 minutes.

My small area

Done enough means (for example: space for one plate)

02 / Give things four destinations

Use bags, boxes or distinct spots already available. No shopping for an organising system first.

  • KEEP: belongs in this area.
  • DONATE: safe, usable, and ready to leave.
  • TRASH: ordinary waste or recycling, sorted appropriately.
  • RELOCATE: belongs elsewhere; put together for one trip.

03 / Work to the timer

Five minutes: remove obvious trash and free one patch. Ten minutes: add a quick sort of what remains. Fifteen minutes: add one relocate trip or put the keep items in their homes.

  • Handle one item at a time.
  • Put uncertain decisions in one small “later” spot.
  • Stop sorting when the timer ends.

04 / Close, don’t expand

Use the last minute to make the area safe and usable. Donations are not finished until they have a realistic exit plan.

  • Secure trash / recycling.
  • Place donations where I will remember the next step.
  • Leave relocate items together if the trip must wait.

What is easier to use now?

One optional next step / donation exit plan

A usable patch of space is enough. Do not handle sharp, unsafe or unknown materials; seek suitable help. You do not need to finish the whole room.
